Ruth Montandon, née Kapp

1928-2023

With heavy hearts the family of Ruth Montandon née Kapp announces her passing in her ninety-fifth year on Tuesday January 31, 2023. She is mourned by her daughter Tina, grandchildren Matthew and Jesse (Melanie) Montandon, Maya (Ryan) and Thomas Bodrovics and her great grandchild Scout Quinn. She will be missed by her friends and family.

Ruth was an adventurous woman who at the age of 22 left Switzerland to visit her brother in Australia, first with a detour to Canada to visit her aunt. She never made it to Australia though as she fell in love with a Swiss farmer she met in Quebec.

Ruth gave generously of her time and her passion to many good causes. During her years of work at the Eastern Townships school board, children’s education in the language of their choice was her focus. She was a tireless volunteer for 20 years at Camp Garagona, a community organisation for people living with mental disabilities. Always an avid reader and literacy advocate, Ruth spent countless hours volunteering at the Bedford Library after her retirement. Ruth had a love of flowers, and a beautiful garden surrounded her house and filled the quite parts of her life with beauty.

Special thanks to the team at La Residence Bedford who cared so well for her these last two years and to Drs. Marandi, Sirhan, Turgeon and their amazing assistants.

Ruth invites you to make donations in her memory to Camp Garagona  or the Brome-Missisquoi Perkins Hospital Foundation.

A ceremony will be held at a later date.

Ruth and I supervised a group of Massey-Vanier secondary IV students on a trip to Switzerland many years ago (I'd have to check my old passports to be sure of the year). It was wonderful to have her because of her Swiss backgound. She was born near Basel (I believe she said it was in Muttenz), where the border with Germany is all over the place (on both sides of the Rhine), and she recounted how during World War II the confused American pilots dropped bombs on Switzerland ! So yes, she was a great story-teller and the 21 kids on that trip loved her. My condolences to Tina and the family.
